I thought the game was really original, but unfortunately it felt like it was always better to press every key instead of trying to shoot the baddies. If I tried to press the 2 or 3 correct keys I might get them, or might lose a life. If i kill everything I’ll get +100 for the chicken, -50 for the civilian, leaving me better off before you take into account I’m immune to damage?

The Chicken and the Civilian kind of cancel each other out. One gives you 50 gold, the other takes 50 gold.
Only a few rooms near the entrance of the mine can be kind of bonus rooms, where 3 chickens and one bandit show up.
At the beginning, you don’t have enough ammo to clear the whole room. Focusing on hitting the chickens early on and looking for treasures on the map are good strategies to get stronger quickly.
If you die, you are sent back to the entrance of the mine and have to fight your way to the boss all over again.
If you have enough ammo to blast everyone in the room, you're more than ready to take down El Pollo Loco and finish the game. =)
