I haven't downloaded the map yet, but maybe if there's a road going by, here in iowa anyway gravel dust tends to mess with yeilds from time to time, so this could be to simulate that on field edges?

already done.  Look at the soil map. The edges of every field have the worst soil type (yellow) to simulate poorer yield on headlands from compaction, dust, tree lines, etc
