Just read what the characters tell you. These things were pointed out a couple of times by Edgar and Evie, I think. You can't skip dialogue in this game, because it's a story-driven RPG.
Well, you need to buy and use all the items from the shops. Including all the spell books. To use a spell book, you need to click on it in the inventory.
