Good points:
👉The menu is cool, the art and the animations for the UI are great. The title screen also has a nice animation with the little Earth.
👉In the game, I love the sprint bar, the design is very good as well. The character animation and movement are great. The animation and art of the mountain are really cool, love it.
Bad points:
👉Where is the objective in the game? I saw that you mentioned in a comment that the goal is to survive, but why not write that somewhere in the game? We spawn into the game and don’t know what to do. For example, since you have 7 people working on the project, maybe someone could record themselves speaking into a microphone and add a narrator voice to your game. You could say something like "A lot of things are going to happen, your objective is to survive." Something simple.
👉What’s with the white square at the bottom of the screen? Just change the color to show it’s grass or something, because it’s really hard on the eyes. And since you have 7 people, the art designer could take a moment to quickly create a grass texture—just 2 hours of work if you don’t know anything about TileMap.
👉Third, please add a slight delay between the movement of the camera and the player. It feels a bit off right now, not smooth. Maybe, for the natural disasters, you could add exclamation points to warn the player that something is about to happen. Right now, the red marks are not really clear; we don’t know if we need to avoid them or if something is going to happen.
👉Some sound effects would also be nice. You don’t necessarily have to create them yourself, as it can take a lot of time, but in a game jam, it's what we’re missing. Small effects like explosions or footsteps would be great.
👉The most important advice I can give is not to focus on just one theme. I see that in terms of animation and design, the game is really well done. The fireballs are cool, and the smoke trails behind them are nice too. But try not to focus too much on one aspect of the game. I understand that if you love working on art and animation, you might spend more time on that, but remember you’re not selling an asset pack, you’re selling a game. The goal in game jams is to touch on everything. By giving the player a clearer objective, removing the white square, and adding some sound effects, your game would have been much more enjoyable to play. But always keep in mind to make the game playable and fun to play first before focusing on secondary details.
In this review, I don't want to criticize negatively for no reason. I’ve tried to focus on specific examples, because the goal is to improve next time. I don’t want you to see it negatively, and I hope you’ll understand.
Feel free to check out my game (After my critique, I don’t think you’ll want to, but I’m still putting it here). 👎
