I'd say yes, both the controls and the gameplay is very intuitive and I'm confident you're capable of refining the 4 directional system as you have a lot of talent and it sounds like you've already got some ideas for solutions. A 2 directional system is going to be simpler to create and cause fewer bugs but 4 directions will lead to more interesting possibilities.
