I eventually managed to get version 0.9.09 working, but now with 0.9.10 I'm following the same steps as before but not having any luck - getting the "Unable to find game!!:" pop-up message instead.
I had the same problem. Have you tried download the itch.io app and download the game directly from the app? it works fine for me after I download my game thru the app, same w/ the demo. my mac is 10.15.3
