is there any appreciable difference between the regular exe and the 32 bit one?

The difference is down to if your operating system is older than 20 years. 64 bit programs cant run on 32 bit systems. So it's useless for basically everyone, but it is generated automatically during compiling and there is no real reason to remove it.
