Hi, thanks for the question. I actually wrote my own engine on the top of the RPG Maker platform. RPG Maker can actually be quite flexible if you know your way around java scripts and plugins a bit. I was considering other engines but since I knew RPG maker so well I actually saw a potential in it to be formed into something else. It took some time but I feel like it payed off in the end.
