So after some testing, it looks like the itch app’s built-in browser doesn’t support the game. You’ll have to play the game by following the game link in your own browser. You can quickly do so in the options menu:

Following your instructions leads to a loading bar and the splash image flashes for less than a second, and then it's a blank black box.
