Fun game, it gets challenging in the higher levels. I would have like a rotational type movement as the orthogonal movement felt out of place at times.

Yeah, I noticed that too, especially when you walk to the lower part of the level and the camera is almost 'on top' of the character. There was a particular feel I wanted to go for, didn't have enough time in the end so a couple things were sacrificed in the end. The controls  and character models being one of them. Oh well, you live and you learn :)
