Hello, I really like your concept of using the device as a responsive art piece :D. It responding to pats with sounds make it interesting. But I didn't like how every screen had the same content and how twisting did not function any different from a regular button.I want to see more responsive imagery, but at the same time I myself tried generating visuals on the device and it was a struggle
Thank you for appreciating the concept and taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment! Expanding interactivity and graphics is the next step in our development. By the way, it’s interesting to ask: how do you think the twisting mechanic could be integrated into the current concept? We were considering something like a “soul switch” (or level shift), where each soul has a more defined personality. We’d love to hear your perspective — what kind of direction would you suggest?
I was thinking that each block could something radiating out or something going in, and this depends on their neighbouring blocks. As a proof of concept, image each block is a magnetic North (N) or magnetic South (S) pole. And imagine you are drawing the magnetic field lines. If N-S are together there will be lines joining them, and if N-N or S-S are together the lines will seem to push each other away.
Something more interesting would to use these field lines as a sort of coordinate system for your visuals, then you can put in anything , though I cant guarantee how easy that would be to compute.
I like your idea of giving each cube a defined personality, and then you can expand on the binary system i suggested.
I apologise if my review seems harsh. I do think there's space for an app like this on the WOWCube. And I understand it’s difficult to develop in just the emulator, without access to the actual device. However, the storage capacity of the WOWCube is a total of 32MB, average file size for a game is 1MB. A 16MB game is definitely too big. There were also some errors, not all animations seem to be loaded correctly. Lastly, it would be interesting if the effects had more interaction with twisting the cube, for example by allowing you to combine visual/auditory effects or something like that. Keep it up!
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to play my game and leaving such a thoughtful comment! I don't find it harsh at all, as this is only a demo version of the app.
I would like to add that, in my opinion, not only is there a place for such applications in wowcube, but such applications are a priority area for development. It seems to me that it is quite difficult for cube to compete with games on mobile devices, computers and VR headsets. Within this entire ecosystem of devices, the cube should occupy a special place: media installation environments. Some steps in this direction have already been taken: for example, the aquarium for Wowcube. I just tried to make another one.
If I finish developing the full version, I will definitely optimise its size. The storage capacity limitations became apparent to me in the last few days of the game jam.
Could you please tell me please which animations you mean? All animations played correctly in the emulator (floating colour change, transparency change on tap, smooth image appearance on twist). Perhaps these effects should be made more obvious and distinct? Or maybe it's the sparkles animation that doesn't work, which I simply didn't have time to remove from the code?
Also thank you for seeing the potential of this application! Additional effects when twisting and splitting the cube module are planned for future versions of the game: I didn't have enough time and development experience for WOWCube to implement this behaviour within the game jam. I would like to note that the separate behaviour of sound and colour in the modules when they are separated from each other was the starting point for the development of this media installation. However, it is technically impossible to test such behaviour of the modules through an emulator, so in the current version, the functionality of the application is limited by its capabilities.
I am truly inspired by the capabilities of WOWCube and admire the courage of its developers! I would be incredibly interested in releasing the full version of this media installation. I will do so if I get the device itself: this is the only way to fine-tune the application and test its UX during prolonged use, for example, at home, in a bar or at a digital art exhibition.
Wishing you more amazing discoveries, sincerely yours,
Pavel
