I love this game! I'm always a fan of music based games and this one is no exception :). I found it a bit difficult at times but still had fun. Nice job!

Hey thanks for the feedback!

Glad you liked the game :)

Dang this game is hard!

I love the idea of combining a rythym game with a "simon says" mechanic but I really couldn't get very far score-wise.

Developer

Yeah I'm sorry for the difficulty :P

Next time ill make sure to balance it better! Glad you liked the concept.

I have a genuine question: Are you able to do the double-time portions?! With consistency!? If so, what's your secret -- is it a smooth motion, or is it a start-stop? I want to see it screen recorded. Because that would be the most impressive thing ever.

I don't know if this will ruin your idea, but a "glass filling" animation in conjunction with your opacity idea might be a tad more intuitive -- humans are far better at grokking tiny differences in shape than tiny differences in opacity.

Granted, it stops being as much of a memory game.

...But then again, you could just have the glass stay completely full for some number of milliseconds before disappearing. Bam, it's about memory again.

Also, I'm imagining some of the squares getting filled with diagonals (bottom left to top right), or closing in from each side, or even radially outward. Oh man, what if it looked like a literal physics simulation of liquid pouring into the square? Jesus that would be so sexy.

OH one last idea: some amount of "forgiveness," like if the thing disappears but i was JUST there, like, 1/10th of a second ago, then maybe I should get credit. 😬

Anyway great work! I like the idea of the song's rhythm telling me when it's finally okay to move, it's almost like the OPPOSITE of a rhythm game. If that makes sense. Very cool!

Man, and like a GLASS SHATTERING effect on a successful beat hit. Like the weight of your static cursor fucking SMASHES the square to pieces. Imagine a slight shock wave effect emanating from the cursor, or maybe the cursor just vibrates a bit. Pneumatic pumping, like a fucking MANTIS SHRIMP. Ugh, that would be so sexy.

Hey, thanks for all the feedback and creative ideas! All of your proposals are pretty cool! Especially the glass filling animation makes much more sense now that I think about it which would definitely get rid of the memorization aspect of the game.

Regarding your question, I can do the fast portion about 70% of the time.  The important part is to do it in a smooth motion and abruptly stop before repeating said pattern until the end. If you truly insist on it, I can record a video showing you how I do it  :P

Also regarding hit error, It was something I planned to add, but sadly had no time left, which contributed to the difficulty significantly. This lack of time is also why the song cuts off abruptly.

Another reason is the fact that i took myself as a the basis for how hard the game should be... that was probably a mistake on second thought.

I would consider myself quite good at rhythm games, so with the combination of me wanting to make an S rank quite hard to achieve it all lead to this outrageous difficulty.

I don't really get what you mean by the fact that the music tells you when to move? Sorry about that, further clarification would be appreciated!

All in all, thanks for your comment, all the feedback definitely helps a lot! Hope you had fun whilst playing my game :)

Really addictive, I had a lot of fun playing it but couldn't get higher than a C lol

Developer

This was so fun!! Also made me realise I may have less brain cells than I thought...

Glad you had fun! :P

I played it again and now the song looks good! Maybe it was a problem of the browser, I don't know! Anyway still a good game experience!

Great news!

Glad to know you enjoyed it! :)

I like the idea and I think that it is a good way to interpet the theme! I don't if this is only for me...but it seems like a slow motion song, is it supposed to be in that way?

Developer(+1)

The song shouldn't have a too low bpm. It's completely plausible that I might have done a mistake using delta time within my code. Welp, nothing I can do about that, but thanks for the feedback. I will definitely take it into account!

Also nice to know you like the idea, thanks! :)

Yes maybe it depends on this! Did you use deltatime to slow down other things in the game?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

As far as I am concerned, the songs speed shouldn't be affected even if I didn't use delta time.

I snooped around my code and it's quite probable, that I didn't account for the timers I use for the appear animation for each tile. That would explain the feeling as if the song was slowed down since all tiles would be somewhat off beat. Of course neglecting the fact that they were off beat in the first place since I placed them manually making the margin even wider :P

Once again, thanks for pointing it out. In future games I will definitely fix this issue!
