Giving player the option to start when they want, is a double edged sword, but I think this worked out great. I got to explore the environment without worry, and it was quite fun too, since the instructions were scattered around the house. Only downside to that was that theoretically the player could prepare as much candy as they wanted, which I unashamedly did hehe. Ok jokes aside, it's not a bad decision, it was nice way to start the game. And I liked the ideas for different things that could happen because of the masked man, they are simple yet different. I don't know what exact is the trigger for masked man events right now, but you could also add some randomness to it, so player cannot always predict if the masked man comes. That would add nice tension maybe. Although I had some problems differentiating between some of them, as in realizing what I was meant to do. With the jack o' box, I really liked that the sound became louder if you were closer, as it would realistically do, but right now it was little fooling since that applied no matter if you were downstairs or upstairs heh. I might also just be bad at playing :P
Regardless, before I start rambling too much: This was already fun, and I think you should definitely consider further development. Great work for your first game jam! ^^
Congrats on the first jam entry! Scattering the instructions around the house is a pretty creative idea to get the player familiar with the layout before the game in earnest starts up. I had a lot of difficulty traversing the stairs though, especially to get to some of the farther jack-in-the-boxes. The "cosplaying" trick-or-treaters are appreciated haha.
This is freakin awesome, but I couldn't figure out how to turn the breaker back on (left and right click didn't do it). I could see more house layouts (and maybe even co-op?) making this concept insanely good. Well done
