Title
Rippling Floor
Description
I made a mostly percussive track. Most of the percussive sounds come from samples, except for the noise percussion, which I made using band pass filters on white and violet noises.
The 4/4 feel before the kick comes in is given by the synths. There is a bass synth made with operator which plays a continuous note and at each downbeat shifts to the higher octave with an envelope similar to that of a kick. The same is done on the upbeat, with a similar synth in a higher range. These synths play a sine wave that I modulated with a waveshaper.
The percussion that come in at 0:56 are tuned, so that they act as the melodic part of the track. The idea here was to have a twist: "synths make rhythm, percussion makes melody".
After the break, another synth comes in, which tends to be more melodic. This synth also plays a constant note, but I use a pitch shifter to make it glide to other notes. In order to make give it a rhythm instead of a continuous sound, I put a gate on the synth, which I sidechained to a muted kick track.
Particular subdivisions are found in most percussions, especially noise perc, hihats and the melodic elements. The 4/4 basement (main synths and kick) never play subdivisions in order to keep the core steady and allow freedom to other elements.
Plugins used
I only used Ableton's instruments (operator, simpler and wavetable) and packs (some drums)
