  • The game is pretty neat. I think I walked out of bounds though. It went from tileset to complete black. The premise of the game is super neat, upbeat, and fun. I think it would have been nicer to allow the player to click to shoot with how many enemies came to attack. Also, I collected the heck out of some gems, but because I didn't have just 1 blue gem, I couldn't buy a card. I had 2x the red and green, but only 5 gems. Seems like a balance issue there. Regardless of criticisms, you have a very functional, fun game to play here. I really hope to see what you come up with next!

Mechanics

Gem Collection: Explore the world of light to gather gems while keeping the lights on. Gems are vital for unlocking and upgrading skills.

Light Management: Maintain the light to ensure visibility and ease of gem collection. When the lights go out, visibility is reduced, increasing the challenge.

Skill Unlocking: Use collected gems to unlock and upgrade skills in the world of shadows. Experiment with different gem combinations to create powerful abilities.

Demon Combat: Apply your unlocked skills to battle waves of demons in the shadow realm. Each wave introduces tougher enemies and more complex challenges.

Strategic Planning: Balance gem collection, light management, and skill usage to effectively tackle increasing difficulties and survive the game’s challenges.
Story

In Shadawn, players are thrust into a world where light and shadow are in constant conflict. As the protagonist, you must navigate the world of light to gather gems and keep the illumination steady. These gems are crucial for unlocking powerful skills needed to fight the encroaching darkness in the shadow realm. Each wave of enemies represents a deeper struggle, mirroring the internal battles we face against our own demons. The journey symbolizes the fight to maintain one’s inner light while confronting the pervasive darkness.

Controls

Keyboard: Configurable for AZERTY or QWERTY layouts. Use directional keys or arrow keys to move.

Mouse: Direct your shots and interactions with precise control.

Skills: Automatically triggered once unlocked, making it easy to focus on strategy and combat.

Really great work! The gameplay loop is very addicting and I had a lot of fun playing. The art is also super cute and well done. I'd love to see you continue working on this game once the jam is over!

I loved this game and the gameplay loop is one of my favorites I've played from this game jam so far. I want the song that plays when you're collecting gems as a ring tone :D Its incredibly catchy. Love the art, love the character designs.

Being able to reignite lamps would be really cool to add. Maybe make it an upgrade card that you have to spend resources on or something? It feels a little bit empty with no sfx from enemies or your attacks. The music is great, but it just feels like its missing something without the sfx.

Overall, I really hope you continue with this. I could see myself sinking a lot of time into a full version of this game!

Thank you for this positive feedback, really appreciated! Maybe in the future we can add the reignite option like for example if you kill this amount of monsters it will drop this kind of resources to turn on 1 light. 

Yeah for the SFX our bad... We didn't had time to add it before the deadline, completely agreeing here.

The art looks super cute!
Love every character that you have designed!
The effect of enemies comming from the shadows with only eyes being vsisible <3
Music is on point, fits perfectly!
Adding combat sfx would defenitely make it more fun.

The skills and upgrades are awesome but the way you obtain the them was a little unintuittive for me.
I guess it was like 'if you have enough then you can select that skill' but for a long time I was thinking that I am buying them for that amount of resources (but it didnt make any sense, coz I could not find that many of them).
And about gathering resources I wish there was an opotion to reignite the lamps.
And even before they are gone you should add an indicator (like an arrow) that the lamp in this direction is about to burn out! I found myself exploring looking for resources and all of a sudden Im coming back to the lamp and it Is gone. (Also light fade is cool but flickering would make it more visible that its about to burn out)

For the sound part, I completely agree with you, we didn't had time to add all sounds like SFX for the deadline :(
Like you said, I think we can improve the user experience on the skills part and the way we get them. Now you need to collect many gems of different colors in the "light part" but some of them are hidden in the dark if you loose some light area.

The indicator arrow is a nice idea + the flickering!
