Theme:

Tick Tock...

How does it fit the theme?
The Trial was celebrated every three years by ancient heroes, but now there is limited time to uncover its secret.
(The "tick-tock" motif can be heard subtly in the piano at the end of the first track, but unfortunately, music that featured it more prominently had to be cut from my submission.)

Right from the opening grace notes I was immediately reminded of some Studio Ghibli soundtracks, and I mean that in the best way possible. I think you succeeded in creating an aural landscape that gave the impression of ancient traditions and mysteries being unearthed. I could picture in my mind quaint villages in a lush pastoral setting dotted with giant arcane ruins. The heroes, plucked from their simple lives, hesitant, hapless, yet able to rise to the occasion when tradition and crisis collide. The climactic rise of the brass instruments near the end of the last track was so nice. Absolute pro-level work! 💯

Thank you! Ghibli and Legend of Zelda are definitely some of my biggest influences right now, so I'm happy you got those vibes!

Arrival At Noon is my favorite piece! Amazing work!

There's a wide range of emotion here! Trial of the Triennium starts off with a sombering sort of pressure to it, relieving a bit at the end with it's bittersweet resolution. Arrival at Noon's changes things up with it's upbeat and carefree nature, and Horizon of Hope relays a much more serious tone that could be percieved as resolute or hopeful. This soundtrack is excellently composed, very nice work overall!

Trial of the Triennium: This is a cool theme. I like used of woodwinds as the primary instruments covering the melody while accompanied by piano and strings. The oboe and bassoon in particular carry such distinct colors that they seem to give that reedy energy feel to the serious undertones of the piece. There is a sadness that is present initially, but toward the end, that sadness seems to lighten up slightly.

Arrival at Noon: This starts out with a much more upbeat feel that is really pleasant to listen to. I really like the use of the mallets doubling the flutes and then taking a countermelody in the second phrase. The harp-writing is very well done. Harp and woodwinds together give me a floral connotation that is simply peaceful. The transition back into the beginning with the string pulses is really cool.

Horizons of Hope: Now you finally introduce the brass! The brassy sound gives the initial theme a darker tone initially. The tension rises when the strings enter. But then at 1:25, the hopeful optimism finally arrives and the ending on the piano and strings is beautiful.

Listening to the soundtrack made me think of a mysterious fantasy adventure. Good use of dynamic range to express emotion. Well balanced stereo separation with depth, every instrument had a place in the field. I think a good reverb would really take the soundtrack to the next level.

That's a good suggestion. I was happy about the depth too, but the credit just goes to MuseScore--I didn't mix it, haha.

All hail MuseScore then haha. Still it was a great composition.

If you're curious about the reverbs you can still take the track, put it in a free DAW and add a reverb to check out how it sounds like. Set the reverb mix to about 20-30% and play with the settings, you can flip through the presets too to get a feel.

There's also a great free reverb which would crush most DAW reverbs - https://www.kvraudio.com/product/dragonfly-reverb-by-dragonfly-reverb. Requires some setting up, but I think it'd be worth it.

I love a xylophone, I love a track in mixolydian, I love the amount of emotional intelligence I'm getting from these tracks. Also, I know the natural tendency is for submissions to be really over the top, but I appreciate the entries that took the "OST" part of the jam into account. This feels like it fits into a larger ecosystem with game visuals, sounds, voice, enhancing interactions rather than overpowering them. It really feels like it lives in a world.

Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it.
