Interesting game. I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Kenney Jam, if you’d like to take a look. :)

Developer

Awesome! I posted your video and a linkback to your website on my developer site (Raven Gen Games)!  Thank you so much for taking your time to review our little game!

This played really well.  Controls were good.  Physics felt good.  Music and sound effects are a plus.

My advice is make sure you fully explain the gameplay mechanics to the player.  You mentioned movement and jump, but you left out the double-jump.  I got pretty far before I realized I could double-jump.  Also the stomping on zombies.  I was fell down in that deep pit before I realized I had an attack I could use.

Great job though!

I now realize that the installer is unfriendly, thank you for your feedback.  I created a second page that has the game as just a .zip file and can be found at

https://sceisce.itch.io/the-cursed-noninstaller

for easier view and play.

Once the jam is over, and I can edit this page, I will change it so that I don't have two pages for the same game.

Installer for a jam game?

Developer

Yeah - first time doing a jam, not sure about what is "normal" or not, and when I didn't see any standard / normal in the submissions I created the installer.

The standard is either providing zipped game ready to run or host a browser version. There are lots of games on the jam, most of them are played just a couple of minutes. Basically people want to try the game quickly and remove it, installer makes both more difficult.

The engine choice is also unfortunate. 107 MB for a short 2D platformer is overkill. Don't use Unreal for small games 🙃
