Guidelines for Rating Games

As mentioned on the jam page, entries will be rated 1-5 stars on multiple independent metrics. To make rating less ambiguous and more consistent across raters, here is a Sawyer Friend's rating system, and the official suggested (though not required) way to determine what star rating a game should receive.

1. This element actively harmed the game for me

2. On a binary of good and bad, this element was bad

3. On a binary of good and bad, this element was good

4. This element was exceptionally good

5. This was the best game for this category

These may need to be slightly altered for the overall metric. Something like:

1. Playing this game was an overall negative experience

2. On a binary of good and bad, this entry was bad

3. On a binary of good and bad, this entry was good

4. This entry was exceptionally good

5. This was the best entry, jam wide

Given there would be only one game receiving each 5 star entry, it might be necessary to go back and re-assess the ratings. I would also suggest striving for total independence of ratings, as much as possible. Games with great gameplay, art, or stories tend to have inflated ratings of other areas. It's totally fine for a 5 star game in graphics to get 1 or 2 stars in some other area. Lastly, there is no way to enforce this rating system, so it is a suggestion, but not a requirement.

Any thoughts, discussion, suggestions or changes, please drop them below!
