What Kind of Themes Can I Suggest?

Credit: Tuile

To suggest a theme for HAGJ that won’t be removed during the vetting process, here are some important guidelines to keep in mind:

  • No sexual themes – We aim to keep this jam suitable for all ages.
  • Avoid repeating past themes – We don’t accept themes that are too similar or identical to previous HAGJ themes. To check if your idea has already been used, visit our Summary of Previous HAGJs..
  • Must be historically viable – Themes should be based on real historical events, places, or topics related to Earth. Examples of themes that won’t work: Elven History, Martian Invasion, Magic in the 22nd Century.
  • Limit controversial topics to pre-1900 – If you suggest topics that could be triggering, please limit them to events that occurred more than 100 years ago. No themes supporting harmful ideologies – Themes or entries promoting ultranationalism or the persecution of marginalized groups will be disqualified. Discussions and representations of historical atrocities or extreme nationalism are allowed, but games that endorse or condone such actions or ideologies are not. Before sharing your theme idea, check the following:
  • Make it concise and clear – Your theme should be easy to understand and not overly long. Focus on keywords. For reference, the maximum number of expected words for a jam theme will not exceed 5-6 words. For example: a general topic like “Masonry”, or a more specific one like “Masonry in Ancient Greece”. Once you’ve got your theme idea, be on the lookout for the theme suggestion round form!
