How Is The Game Jam Theme Chosen?

Credit: Tuile

The final theme of every Historically Accurate Game Jam (HAGJ) is chosen through a series of theme submission and voting rounds. Participants, community members, and anyone interested in the jam can suggest and vote on themes.

Themes are submitted within a week-long submission period using an official Google Form for each HAGJ event. The jam co-hosts are only involved during the vetting stage to ensure appropriate themes. For more details on theme guidelines, check out the wiki article, “What kind of themes can I suggest?”. If you’re thinking about submitting a theme, this article will be helpful!

After the vetting process, there are 2-3 voting rounds. During each round, themes with insufficient votes to make it into the next round are eliminated. Depending on the number of suggested themes that have made it through the vetting process, the number of voting rounds will vary between 2 to 3 in total. The final voting round will narrow the list down from a Top 5 Themes List to decide the Final Theme. Each round starts the day after the previous one ends, giving the trustees time to make any needed materials, update Google Forms, and to prepare announcements.

Here’s a breakdown of the process during any HAGJ:

  • Week 1: Submit your theme After the Theme Suggestion Round closes, trustees/co-hosts take one day to vet and finalize the theme list.
  • Weeks 2-4/5: Voting rounds take place via Google Forms You can select two themes you’d like to see as the final theme. Announcements are made at the start and end of each round, along with the voting results and important dates.

For exact dates and more information, check the ongoing jam page of an HAGJ event that you’re interested in. The following is an example of how it will look on a live jam page:
