How One Sound Effect Made My Puzzle Game Juicy!

Welcome Back!

Welcome to the 11th Musta̶c̶h̶e Dev Weekly Update, where I share the progress I’ve made over the last week and the challenges I’ve encountered.

This week, I was mostly bug-fixing, but I managed to finally finish the settings menu. Well, I mean, the functionality is done (aka back-end), and the aesthetics are almost done (aka front-end).
I also did some polishing for ScaleUp, including SFX and animations.

UI 🖥️

For the sake of putting out a free demo, I needed to make the UI a little better and more user-friendly.
So, I humbly asked YOU for feedback on the settings menu through both Twitter/X and Facebook.
I received some solid feedback that changed the settings menu like this:

If you have any further suggestions, feel free to comment below this post.

Tooltips (Hints) 💡

To make the UI even more user-friendly, I added tooltips. After all, not all gamers are game developers who understand what each option does.

By the way, feedback is still welcome.

Analog Stick & Bug Fixing 🐞

I’m not sure if I mentioned the key mapping settings before, but the game still lacked joystick control—it could only be played with the D-pad.
So, for a better user experience, I added analog controls, which can also be rebinded. Whatever type of controller you use, the game will always be playable, even if you’re using a Nin Station 360 Pro controller.

Aside from that, I spent a lot of time bug fixing. I fixed about 5 or 6 bugs that had been haunting me in my dreams.
Still, with school, you can’t do a lot.

ScaleUp: Some Polish ✨

Remember when I said I wouldn’t let ScaleUp distract me from working on Ryu’s Revenge and that I’d only work on ScaleUp for one hour a day?
Well, that one hour is not available anymore, not since school started. But I just can’t add another project to the abandoned projects graveyard.
So, I made some slight progress 🤏.

Sounds 🔊

What game doesn’t have SFX?
Whatever the answer is, I added sounds to ScaleUp. You may not have noticed, but here’s a gamedev trick:

To create variety, you can randomize the pitch of a single sound.

Listen closely, and you’ll notice that the entire game just uses the same pop sound.

Alongside the animations, this feels so good.

Speaking of animation, I made an animation that simply says, “Sorry, you can’t ScaleUp.

School, I Guess 🏫

Regarding school, the situation isn’t getting any better. I barely had time to write this weekly update for you.
So, if I suddenly disappear one day, you’ll know why.

By the way, I’m now consistent with both my sleeping schedule and workout routine 💪
(Just in case you care…)

Anyway, that’s it. Thanks for reading, and see you next week!

Who Am I❓

I’m Mohamed, known as Mustache Dev. For the last 4 years (since 2021), I’ve been making games solo using only my mobile phone.
I’m currently working on Ryu’s Revenge, my biggest project so far. It’s a 2D action platformer about a ninja slime named Ryu, seeking revenge for his family and entire clan after a brutal betrayal.

If you add Ryu’s Revenge to your collection, you’ll be notified when the free demo is out and when the full game is released.

Adding Ryu’s Revenge to your collection (and liking this post) is the best way to support me. Thanks ❤️
