First of all: Follow me on Mastodon, at @chainedlupine. I will be using this instance to post updates more frequently.
Here's my plan! I will be making two games:
* Relic of Kalevala - This is the original Flash version, re-compiled using Haxe and OpenFL to run on modern hardware. This game will get some visual improvements (such as higher native FPS and rendering size) but otherwise will be mostly the same as the original game. I do intend to tweak it both from changing some of the flaws from the original, and adjusting the story so it meshes to what I envision for the next game. The two original endings of the game will still be in Relic, but there will be a third ending, which is unlocked by the never-finished expansion I was working on for the original Flash game. (This third ending is going to be canonically what I will be using going forward, and what the second game starts off from, so be sure to complete Relic to see it!)
* Guardian of Kalevala - Guardian will take place after Relic. It is also an entirely new game, written in the Godot game engine. This is what I have been working on for the last few years, and will support a vastly improved visual landscape compared to the first game. I'm still working out what to put in this version, and it will mostly depend on how well Relic does as for the scope, but my intention is to finish it after releasing Relic.
Now, what time frames are we talking about? I hate to make promises. I've already done in a bunch of times and I've failed spectacularly to keep them. I apologize for that and it hurts me, too.
So, not going to say anything about release dates until I get things closer to done. I am working on Relic right now, and I will start updating my Mastodon account (see above) to keep you informed.
I know I've been a big disappointment to those who have wanted more of the world of Kalevala, and I am so sorry. I will try better, I promise.

As someone who occasionally checks in to see how the project is going, I'm just really glad to see that things are progressing in the background.
I wish you the best of luck with it and look forward to seeing further updates in future.
Thanks for saying hi! And thanks for not making promises. :)
Us fans of the Flash game are old and understanding now. We'll be stoked to see a return to Kalevala whenever it happens, whether in six months or twenty years. Take care of yourself, work on what gives you joy, and we'll throw some money at you whenever you happen to have deliverables. :) Don't make promises that'll fill you with guilt, and give us a drip feed of hope and excitement, instead! We love hearing from people who made things we love.
Good luck!
Looks like the wait paid off for me in the end. Thanks for the update on your progress.
You're making a Metroidvania for free, man. That usually takes experienced devs about a decade. Don't sweat it!
