Do game developers need to play games? At first glance, to grasp the essence of the field, they do need to play. However, with more experience in games, developers might lose their originality. Moreover, it depends on the types of games one is playing.
To begin with, there are numerous genres of games and their combinations. To fully understand a game's potential, one should play it. However, I personally find that many of my ideas are mere replicas of the games I have already played, making it challenging to generate new concepts.
Furthermore, the games developed by all developers are designed to be addictive, and it's not surprising that we, as individuals, can also become hooked. I have observed my classmates wasting their time daily on the same games, such as League of Legends or Valorant. These competitive games lose their value over time, as individuals spend countless hours playing them.
The optimal solution I propose is to try a fixed number of games that are considered masterpieces or are popular within the gaming community. The key is to try, not necessarily play extensively. The primary goal of trying out a game is to grasp its feel and analyze its main features.
