Developer Log # 25: Boss and Skill Overhaul

Ahahahaha, welcome in, usual comers!

Hope you're ready for a slight change to what I've continued to make.

Mostly, it was just really huge balancing overhauls, and a few new inclusions!

Mainly two that I wanted to bring up:

- Bosses!

- Skill usages!

Currently, most bosses are slightly larger, and that's it. I've planned to give some other effects to make your fight a bit more fun and exciting.

This includes poisoning, burning, or even cutting at some points. I may consider a dodge or a stun effect, but this does feel a lot more punishing than I'd think, so I'll have to rethink this.


Yes it does look a bit odd, with that small star in Ovatrulant's eye, but this is how I plan to distinguish the certain bosses. Some have just slightly larger textures, and others with their own special abilities. This will be for determination by my own hand, probably until the next two months or one. I need to start doing more work, honestly.

Speaking of work, I have began to start on the hardest part of my game (at least, to the best of my knowledge), the skills! Currently, it's just all unlocked for my own testing purposes, but the only issue I find so far is working with arrays and just having it being able to be manipulated how I want it.

Arrays are tough, but with the spaghetti code I got so far, perhaps it'll just become even more burnt spagetthi (man I'm hungry I guess). 

Anyways, so with the way skills work, I plan to have a selection of 5 you can use from what you've unlocked so far. Using all 10 probably feels a bit too much? Unless it's easily alterable the way I've created my system, I believe that it'll work fine with 5, especially with an "ok" balance of self-buffing and damaging the enemies directly.


The skills currently equipped are just small placeholders for "possible" skills. Spikes is a one-time use, which is basically the stealth rocks from Pokémon, Lightning Smite could stun your enemies, but still deal a lotta damage, cluster sharpener can make your attacks more "boom" like, etc. There are a lot of combinations, especially considering that I may add synergies alongside for an additional boost!

Currently... clicking on them does nothing. I have not wired those in yet. I plan to be by the end of this week, hopefully, and then continue to work on the idea of just getting the unlocked skills be able to correspond alongside these skills. 

Balancing, well, it's just balancing. It's just hard to do in general.

Wrapping up, I think I will focus much harder this week to accomplish a skill workaround, and become more prepared for this possible demo/trailer to be revealed around November. I am still very adamant about that option.
