just curious if there is an update/version planned to support windows too, or do we need to play it trough Proton on Steam?

We will never develop for Windows. It's Linux native and headed to the steam store but for now yes it will run as a non Steam game. this is how we use it in house.
It doesn't need Proton it's made 99% of Python and Linux :)
