You should see a single line of legible text when you open it in a text editor, but you'll want to get a hex editor to help you actually solve the first puzzle (and maybe future puzzles too).
I don't know what I'm supposed to do!
There are often little hints in the puzzle itself! For example:

The Meta logo is supposed to tell you to look at the metadata of the image.
