We're very excited about the new release of the DM Helper and hope it will help enhance your playing experience for this game we all love!

Feel free to leave any feedback, criticism, suggestions or feature requests here. We will add a bit more structure if and when that becomes necessary.

Hey! Just downloaded this and I think it's awesome. Really like the ability to add in new monsters, but would like to see this option expanded to include the ability to add in custom weapon and armour types, etc. into the reference tables so we can use homebrew items.

Thanks for the feedback! As the first official feedback and feature request, you can be sure we'll take it seriously!

The table layouts are all currently hard-coded, so it will be quite a bit of work to make them all customizable as you suggested. A quick and dirty version might be to have a separate table or section in each tab for a dedicated ta for homebrew reference notes.

Sounds good :) Was also thinking about maybe it using an editable .xml file that we could add our own things into? Same as editing the bestiary.xml file in Notepad++ (which I know isn't needed as this can be done in-program, just an example).

I have tried a dozen times, resetting my computer in between attempts, but it won’t let me save additions to the bestiary.
I make a monster, name it and add the picture. Close the bestiary, open it and the monsters still there. I save my campaign, close DMHelper and reopen it and my monster is not in the bestiary anymore. Again I’ve reset my computer between attempts and have saved multiple times both through the file menu and with Crtl S.

In my current homebrew campaign I can’t really be making 4-5 homebrew monsters before every session only to have to do it again next week.

Happy New Year!

You're absolutely right, you should not have to recreate your monsters in the Bestiary! I suspect this is a known issue and I can offer two potential solutions:

1) work around: move your Bestiary (and any images) to a new location on your harddrive, then go to the options menu and select the new Bestiary location. I recommend to do this without having any campaign open to avoid damaging the campaign monster links.

2) message me on discord, I can share a link to the engineering build where the bug has hopefully been fixed. It would be great if you could try out that. we version and give feedback whether it does indeed fix the issue.

Your first fix works. Thanks a lot! Thanks for the really quick reply too!
This is a guy who makes quality software and cares about it!

Great!

I’m also having this issue - I’ve learned to export a copy of the bestiary every time I add a monster to it, which works but does mean that if I miss doing that, I’m out work. Even saving it in another location doesn’t seem to help.

Developer

That seems to be a very unsatisfying process! What version of the DM Helper are you using? Could you join our Discord server? Then we could chat through how to find a good solution for you.

I just went to check that it was still happening and the monster I created stuck around, so whatever was causing the issue seems to have fixed itself. I did run a bunch of updates on things recently so maybe something there caused an issue. All good now!

Great news! Do let me know if anything further pops up!

I have an .xml file with a large array of homebrew creatures ive been hoping to organize for a long time. I have tried a slew of different processes, but neither importing the beastiary, nor changing the location to my wanted file changes anything. I found that on one attempt, the data on my personal file was deleted, and replaced by the data on the vanilla beastiary. Any solutions for this?

Developer

Hi! Thanks for getting into this and reaching out. The DM Helper expects a specific format for the XML files for both general reading and importing. What I would recommend is to stop by our Discord server and chat with us there - you can also upload your XML, maybe it would be easy to quickly reformat it to match the DM Helper's expectations.

Hello my friend I had another  question for you.
My players noticed something iffy about the radius templates.
It’s been almost ten years since I have had a geometry class but if I remember correctly the radius is only half of the diameter of a circle. If I plug in a 20ft radius in DMhelper I get a circle that is 4 squares in diameter.  That means that your radius input is actually a diameter input.

Although I could be wrong it could be deliberate and let me reiterate that I love this software and this guy is extremely helpful and caring about his software. I don’t wanna come across condescending.

Hi again!

You are absolutely 100% entirely correct. It's an old mistake I made that drives me up the wall every time somebody casts fireball and I put in 20 then have to edit it to double it, if I notice. And my casters have a lot of fireballs...

Good news, though, I've fixed it in the latest versions, so with v2.0, the next release coming up, it will be all good!

Happy gaming and stay safe!

a 3.5e template and rules if not already available my parties play 3.5 exclusively and this is the best tool other than basic paper and pencil

Developer

Hi! Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the compliments.  The DM Helper was built to support 5e D&D, but 95% of the functionality is system and edition independent.

The character and monster stats and most things associated with them are fairly focused on 5e, though. It is in our roadmap to improve on this, to also support other editions of D&D, and other systems like Pathfinder, however we have so much to do that it may yet take a while.
