im trying to edit my save file for Mr tomatos but when I go to the save file its just some random japanese text (I don't have the ++ version)

just got on the game and saw this post and im gonna help if you still play on your on laptop press windows - r and it will bring up a little pop up asking u to type something. you wnt to put %appdata% then it  will bring you to files where you are going to click MMFApplication.

click on mr tomato and open it with notepad. once on notepad click control - a to select all then delete the selected info then click file in the top left and then save

then shut files run the game and the file will be reset

The save file isn't meant to be edited, as its only for the game, and the game is the only thing that can read the file. You can delete it also, using the steps 41f1ex2 made.
