YOUR BAG OF THINGS is an important gameplay element.

When you use this item from your basic INVENTORY, you access a grid-like screen overview of all the items you possess.

You may freely navigate the CURSOR over to and USE items you wish to prompt for more information, but you may also USE THE + SIGN in the bottom-right corner to access COMBINE MODE (and again to exit COMBINE MODE.)

In COMBINE MODE, items now block your CURSOR and by interacting with them can you "pick them up" into your square for a few moments, before it is dropped automatically.  While so holding an item, if you interact with another item, it will attempt to COMBINE them into something new.

Some items will visually change to suggest they may be COMBINED (e.g., SALT + JAR OF WATER have a visual tell).

By exploring the inner-workings of YOUR BAG OF THINGS, you can access items and circumstances not available anywhere else in the game.
