The poor framerate is not just the fault of your machine/software, we're using a very in-efficient shader that we threw in and didn't have time to optimize (student project, tight dead-line and all that). We're looking to release a patch by the end of the month that should hopefully double or triple the framerate, especially at higher resolutions.
