It is possible to open the game on mac (even the M1 macs) if you unzip the downloaded file with "The Unarchiver" utility instead of the default "Archive Utility". To do so right click the file and choose "The Unarchiver" in the "open with" menu.

Still, I can't get the game to not crash past the main menu. Might be a compatibility issue with M1 macs.
Restarting the game a couple times seems to fix the crashes. I was able to complete the game (including all the movies) with no issues.
