There is. When you press space, a number should appear at the top left corner of the screen. That's the building count. Just multiply that by 4 or the average number of people per house and you've got your population!

Don't know why, but I have to press SHIFT+SPACE to see it. Space alone will scroll the screen towards the bottom.
