As of right now their only purpose seems to be emersion. Hopefully a future update will add entities that wait outside your door or maybe ghosts walking around the base only visible in cameras.
This seems to be a common occurence. Go to the main menu, use the reset button when loading and check 'vehicle' (progress is kept).
How do you use the protection kit CD? There's a slot on each servers but it won't snap into it.
