I'm wondering if anyone commented on this connection. In Jorge Luis Borges' short story "The House of Asterion" from 1940s we read about Asterion's perspective of living in the labyrinth, and the consequent arrival of the "redeemer." The infinity of the labyrinth, the loneliness (and certain naiveté) of the main character, people coming to him for sacrifice, the kind (?) end, and even the reference to the same painting by George Frederic Watts, it all seems to me as if the authors were greatly inspired by it and took it so much further.
