Grey is used for contextual "meta" questions about the puzzle or the game itself.
E.g. "top gray 'height' = top" or "gray 'me' = souvey" (in Lingo 1, it's "brenton").
There's a very memorable "gray 'you'" panel in Lingo 1.

Can you post an imgur url or something to a screenshot of the state you're stuck at? There are quite a few different ways to end up there, so I can't tell just from your comment which part to hint about.
