Gold decay starts when you stockpile too much gold. Right now the best way to deal with it is to spend gold on upgrades, workers, and progression instead of holding a huge amount.
That said, if it wasn’t clear in-game, that’s on me. I need to explain the gold decay/upkeep system better with a tooltip or warning before it starts draining.
