I had the opposite experience. The combat is creative, and might need tweaking, but it is pretty susceptible to cheese. Just craft and equip attack runes. If you add a speed mult. item (like the feather), your glyphs spawn so quick that you can just mash the keys to fill the entire board and basically negate all enemy attacks.
