This makes very little sense for me personally (I can't speak for other devs), as whenever I put out a new chapter or update my income increases substantially. The quickest way for me to earn money would be to just churn out chapters as quickly as possible with little thought or care put into them.

However, I do things a bit differently than many developers, in the sense that I do not limit myself to a set length or schedule. This allows me to make the chapters as lengthy/complex as they need to be without hurting the game's overall polish or quality. It's a slow & difficult process, but I think the final product will prove without a doubt that it was worthwhile.

Anyway, I posted a little progress report/explanation in the comments above for you guys. I hope this helps to ease worries & concerns: https://itch.io/post/4175864

Thanks,

SirD.

Addressing the below comments!

So firstly: I post regular progress reports in our Discord servers, which are free/open to the public and can be accessed by anyone, Patron or no.

I manage a TON of different pages like this one, so it's easier/faster for me to just share news about development there.

Anyone who is in these servers is aware of why Ch5 of Polarity is taking a while, as I've explained it numerous times before... but allow me to give you guys here on Itch a quick rundown.

1. No, Polarity is not abandoned, nor is development on hold!

2. Yes, I released Ch3 of my other game, Radiant, fairly recently.

3. Yes, there's a very good reason why this one is taking so long.

As I explained over on Discord, Polarity Ch5 is the biggest, lengthiest, and most complex update I've created to date. It is double the size of Chapter 4, which was already much larger than any of the previous chapters. On a single linear playthrough, the chapter is over four hours long, and that's excluding those with multiple save-files who will replay to see the different paths.

So naturally, because the update/chapter is so large, it's taking quite a while to develop. It's basically a years worth of development condensed down into one update. I've been very open and transparent that this would be the case.

Now as for why the chapter is so large...

Polarity Ch5 marks the end of Part 1 of the story, so you can basically think of it like the "finale." It is also perhaps the most important chapter of the game. Getting it right is extremely important to me, especially since it's the turning point of the game and sets the stage for the second half.

Anyway, sorry you guys have been waiting for a while. Just know I appreciate y'all and I'm working on it! Your concerns & criticisms are very valid, and I don't blame you guys for having them.

Thanks,

SirD.

Glad you're liking the game so far stevie <3

You're correct that it's going to be a while, but seriously incorrect about it "not having much content." Every chapter of this game is 1.5-3 hours long by the average readers standards unless you're just skipping through the text... and that's excluding the various paths and branching.

+We always release updates in full chapters. :)

Sorry it took me a little while to respond!

The latest chapter will always come with the previous ones, aka they are all-in-one. You do not have to buy them separately!

No worries at all my friend, like I said the miscommunication was likely my own fault as well :P

(1 edit)

This miscommunication is likely my own fault, as back when I released Chapter 1 here (for free) -- making the rest of the game Patreon-exclusive was the plan.

However the game ended up being pretty popular here so we decided to just sell the "final" version of each episode/chapter :P

Speaking of good news, Chapter 3 will be released here in less than 24 hours.

@ApexMerc What you are saying is false/outdated (my fault tho).

While we do have a Patreon, our Itch/GameJolt and other store pages where we sell the game are not "just an ad for the game." Each chapter will be released to patrons first in early-access, until it is ready/finished being polished and tested.

Once the latest chapter is no longer in early-access we release it here.

This is not uncommon practice nor should it be surprising, as it wouldn't make sense to sell a game to people before we're 100% sure it's ready and bug-free.

Originally we did plan to only release Chapter 1 here (for free) and keep the rest exclusive to Patreon, but we changed our plans a long time ago due to popular demand. I've updated the game-page to reflect this as well.

Dev here.

The previous comments are inaccurate and Chapter 3 will indeed be uploaded here once it's out of early-access.

They are likely mistaking something I've said previously, which is that "only Chapter 1 is free to play."

v0.3 was released to patrons in early-access on the 5th. v0.3.1 will be released here on Itch and on other platforms later tonight. We do this to ensure the game is polished/ready for people paying full price for it.

Edit: I think I see now where the confusion came in, as there was an out-of-date statement on the main-game page (we initially planned to only ever release Ch1 here -- but as you can see changed our minds which is why you can also get Ch2).

I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting... unless you read a comment that said we no longer post the game here (which is false).

As with most unfinished/in-progress games, each update goes through an "early-access testing phase." Our Patreon subscribers have said early-access.

Once the latest chapter/update is no longer in early-access (usually the vx.x.1 version), we upload it here and on the other platforms where we charge a set price for it.

If anything, having people pay full price for an update that isn't necessary ready or polished would be the dick move. Anyway, Chapter 3 v0.3.1 will be released here later tonight. The only reason it wasn't released here sooner is it wasn't out of early-access (this is normal, and we've done this for every chapter so far).

Edit: I think I see now where the confusion came in, as there was an out-of-date statement on the main-game page (we initially planned to only ever release Ch1 here -- but as you can see changed our minds which is why you can also get Ch2).

Funnily enough the range of conflicting emotions you guys are describing is exactly what I intended when writing the story. The name "Polarity" is a play on words, with the general idea that the player is being drawn in opposite directions kept in mind throughout.

Even the choice system works in a similar way, with "morality" acting as a pendulum with no clear direction being the "right" way. Sometimes +morality is better, sometimes -morality is better, it depends on the individual choices and it's not always ideal to act in a way that most would consider "moral."

Just watched it... nice video! Thanks, friend!

Nope, don't worry. And while the confrontation is inevitable, there are a few differences that can occur and a few different major outcomes that result from your choices. I recommend making sure you unlocked the Amelia Kane romance/went on a date with her in CH4.

Glad you liked it, and happy for you about the new computer!

Thanks for the kind words. I am extremely adamant about not sharing "release dates" because they're very hard to predict and it tends to land me in hot water.

However, I can say that CH5 (which is the biggest/largest chapter of the entire game) is about 75% completed.

PC, Mac, or Android?

No problem!

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game!

It will be released here and on Patreon the moment it's finished.

Chapter 3 of Radiant is in development, yeah. New progress report will be posted to Patreon later this month.

Thank you my friend!

Need help? Curious how your choices are affecting the game?

While I recommend playing blind on your first run, you're more than welcome to view our official walkthrough.

He gets stabbed no matter what you do, but if you're on Amelia's romance path/manage to unlock the date with her in CH4, she won't hesitate to protect you and your face will not be cut.

I'll copy/paste what I wrote to someone who asked if the game is abandoned:

Never, my friend. Polarity is still ongoing. That said, Chapter 5 is the biggest chapter yet: it's 30% larger than CH4 and has a ton of animations and other aspects that make its development time a little longer than normal.
It's the finale of the first half of the game, however, so it's going to be a good one/worth the wait.

No worries, this game will never be abandoned. Here's a direct quote from a response I made to someone else:

SPOILERS BELOW

The thing is, those choices don't really have the same outcome at all. For example: if you are not involved in a romance with Amelia and instead went on a date with Tanesha, she will hesitate to protect you and her brother will literally slash your face open. In addition to this more minor outcome, there is a major outcome that is immediately present at the start of Chapter 5... and how you handle the situation with him impacts the story/the player-character immensely. Every single punch you throw, for example, sends your "morality" rating into a downward spiral.

I recommend reading the walkthrough to see how choices impact the story if you're unsure. Nearly every single choice in this game all the way down to the very first crucial choice matters... but the outcomes/consequences aren't always immediately apparent. It would actually be quite silly/nonsensical if the consequences of your choices always presented themselves right away.

(1 edit)

Radiant will have a minimum of 20 chapters, which should end up being around 30 hours of gameplay. Polarity will have around 11-12 chapters, closer to 15 hours.

Once Polarity is complete I will focus primarily on Radiant, with a small side-project that I will work on solo. However, when Radiant is done, I will start my next big project/continue to make games well into the future.

You're welcome!

No problem! :)

Copy the file named "patch" and then paste it into your

" > Radiant-v0.2.1 > game

...folder if playing on PC. If you're playing on Android you'll need to download a version of the game that has the patch pre-installed.

That said, I cannot endorse or condone the patch in any official capacity.

(1 edit)

Only Chapter 1 will be free to the public... though it's possible to find our games through less "official" sources and we won't knock you for it because we understand not everyone can afford the support.

Just Google search "Radiant Chapter 2" and I'm sure you can find it somewhere.

For those inquiring, Chapter 2 is out but currently Patreon exclusive (except Chapter 1 - which is free to play). Chapter 2 will be released here on Itch and elsewhere on December 1st, 2020.

While Radiant is not a "free" game, I do offer another free game called Polarity which you're welcome to check out while you wait.

Also: if you really want to play Chapter 2 and can't financially afford to offer your support: you have our blessing if you get it through other, less official means. I won't knock you for it because I've been there myself.

Love you guys, much respect.

Thank you for the support!

Hey Gaij, don't worry, the game won't be abandoned. We put out larger updates (full chapters) which takes a little while.

You can join us over on Patreon if you desire for regular progress updates, monthly 4k wallpapers, and early-access to Ch2, which is coming very soon!

Thanks for the nice words.

In response to your concerns, believe it or not it actually benefits developers more to put out updates quickly, as each update = more exposure, more exposure = more patrons, and more patrons = more income. The reason it takes me a while to put out updates is simple: rather than releasing smaller, incremental updates that lack polish or that "completed" feel, I like to take my time, make larger updates, and make sure they're polished/mostly free of bugs.

In this quest to achieve quality, I actually sacrifice some of the potential for income I'd otherwise receive if I worked much faster... but that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make for higher quality game updates, as my reputation as a game developer is very important to me!

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I'm going to post above with some info regarding the next chapter's release.

Should already be there.

Thanks! All's fixed and will be patched in 0.4.1.

As for the scenario with Tanesha... the walkthrough actually recommends choosing Amelia for this specific date scene (unless you can't stand her) because those who do will still get a very similar scene/date with Tanesha later on. Meanwhile, you'll never get another chance with Amelia so if you want both girls, opt to see Amelia in this update/make sure she agrees to date you in Ch3.

This was one of those rare instances where players won't have a direct/immediate choice between events -- but they technically still do, since the event that occurs is the result of an earlier choice.
