Hello and welcome to my first game jam project!
This time I'll be exploring how to make a platformer in GameMaker Studio.

All the information below is not representative of the final product, features will be removed as needed.

Premise:

You are a young boy, tired of being bullied at school, wanting to get away.
You fall unconscious and wake up as an athletic, young man, ready to embrace the world.
What starts as something dreamy becomes over time dreary, and in the end you must overcome adulthood's challenges and dilemmas to fulfill your dream.

Inspiration:

  • The one-on-one gameplay of "Karateka"
  • The premise and cinematography of "Lookism"
  • The final scenes of "INSIDE"
  • The gameplay of "Mario-Fighter"
  • The visual and sound design of "Only Yesterday"
  • The visual and sound design of "Total Recall" / "MURDER"

Progress:

Concept Art - Protagonist

Concept Sound - Stage 1

Concept Sound - Stage 2

Game Prototype - Day 1/14 (Controls: A/D for left/right, W for jump.

To-do list:

  • Add a multi-jump, dash and lane switching mechanic
  • Look into designing multiple 2D planes per stage, allowing the player to switch between them
  • Create art assets
  • Create music assets
  • Incorporate sound effects
  • Add menu, HUD and other UI elements
  • Add a pause screen w/ menu options
  • Look into coding of dialogue choices

"Rooms":
  • Introduction screen
  • Main menu
  • Options menu
  • Opening cutscene
  • Stage 1
  • Stage 2
  • The Choice
  • The Runner Stage
  • Ending cutscene
  • Game over screen

Controls:
Left Arrow Key: Left
Right Arrow Key: Right
Z: Jump, Double-Jump
X: Slide (on ground), Dash (when airborne)
C: Dodge / Change Layer
Esc: Menu
Space: Pause

This development log may not be updated each and every day, as I'd rather give an update when significant progress has been made.

Good luck to all the other game jammers, looking forward to seeing your completed project!
