It is an expansion to Starforged, and primarily uses the rules and procedures from Starforged. So, familiarity with Starforged or access to the rulebook is assumed.
You don't have to read hundreds of pages of material, since the core rules for Starforged take up about 70 pages and the rest is additional guidance, options, and reference materials (such as random tables). However, if you're looking for a light, jump in and play experience, there might be games that are better suited to your preferences.

There is, in fact, something coming up at DriveThruRPG over Black Friday weekend. You can keep an eye out for that.
Or feel free to pop onto the Ironsworn community discord and DM me for a community copy download code: https://discord.gg/8bRuZwK.
Hey there. 400 pages does seem like a lot, but the vast majority of the book isn't stuff you need to get up to speed with. There's a chapter that walks you through settting up your character and setting, a ton of random tables, and bunches of content that's really only needed when you have a question or want clarification about some aspect of the game.
I'd suggest you to take a look at the first chapter, which is a free download on my website (https://tomkinpress.com/collections/free-downloads/products/ironsworn-starforged...). This will give you a good sense of the game, along with maybe 95% of what you would need to know to get started playing.
Here's a download key, which (I think) will add Ironsworn to your Itch library.

There is a printer-friendly version included in the file downloads.
Sorry if the format doesn't work for you. Of course you can use the old version of Lodestar if that better fits your preferences. The page count comparison doesn't tell the whole story, in that the old version was 8.5 x 11, while this is 6x9 trade size. The new version prints rather nicely at letter-sized or A4 in landscape format with 2-pages side-by-side, which reduces the page count by half for home printing.
The reference book contains content from the core book, so it's purely optional!
For the asset deck, you have a couple of options:
1) Just copy down the ability text from your character's asset cards. Most of the abilities are fairly simple, and you start with a limited number.
2) Use a digital app to track your assets. Depending on how much you want to go digital versus analog, you can do just about everything on an app. Check out your options here: https://tomkinpress.com/pages/community-resources. Or use the app for some things and your physical journal for others.
Hope that helps! Also feel free to join our Discord. Folks there always have good advice: https://discord.gg/8bRuZwK
