Thanks for joining us for the 3rd annual IndieCade/Games For Our Future Climate Jam! Brought to you by Niantic, The Knight Foundation and Earthlab at The University of Washington! This year we are happy to welcome the IGDA Climate SIG as a partner in hosting the jam on their community Discord server and providing mentors and resources for jammers to use.

We are once again inviting game creators from around the world to make games that explore solutions to address a rapidly changing planet. Together we can make a difference! https://www.indiecade.com/climate-jam/

Theme: Empathy and Equilibrium

Subthemes: Nature and Health, Green Energy, Media, Storytelling and Misinformation, Food and Food Systems, Climate Optimism

When: April 22, 2022 – May 1, 2022

Where: IGDA Climate SIG Discord & Itch.io

What: Climate Jam is a fully online game jam starting on Earth Day 2022 and ending on May 1, 2021 focusing on Empathy and Equilibrium.

Find a team:

If you missed the social mixer last weekend or join the jam late you can find other jammers to work with on Discord using the #🌱lfg-recruit-me and the #🌱lfg-join-our-team channels.

Jammer Resources:

We have put together a page of resources for first-time or veteran jammers to help you with your creation.

The IGDA Climate SIG recently published an alpha version of their Environmental Game Design Playbook and are looking for people to use it and give feedback during the jam.

Mentors:

We have some great mentors available to help you with the scientific accuracy of your game, learn more about them on our website. They will be on the #🌱ask-a-mentor on Discord during the jam for you to ask questions or just chat with.

Some of our mentors have also provided inspirational videos that you can watch here.

Knight Foundation Grand Challenge:

We are encouraging games that focus on the problem of misinformation on climate change.

How can your game help address misunderstanding, or even inoculate people from being misinformed about climate change and its effect on people in their community?  Whether a news game, social impact game, educational game, or just a whimsical experiment in explaining the problems of misinformation, we are offering you an opportunity to help address one of the biggest challenges facing the world today.  Those games that do this best will be eligible for additional funding to support further development and promotion; They will also be featured in our June, 4th IndieCade Horizon’s showcase and promoted through our networks in HEVGA and other non-profits around the world

This grand challenge is supported through the generous funding of The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and is a call to action for some of the most creative, inspiring and engaging people in the world to make something that really matters.  Go forth and help change the world for the better.

To qualify your game or prototype must:

Directly address a social, physiological, or educational goal related to the spread of misinformation on climate change.

That’s it! By doing so, you not only help change the world, you’ll get support in doing so.

Events during the jam:

Niantic Lightship Workshop:

Monday April 25th 3-4PM PDT

Learn about Niantic’s Lightship platform and how to make climate games that use AR to make experiences that inspire movement, exploration, and shared experiences.
