It appears I may have been trying to walk past an item, which must be picked up before you can proceed.  Thanks to Paul for his quick communication and diagnosis of my problem, which isn't a problem with the game. 

First map I found a corner that was clear, there were items beyond it and the path was a dead-end, but I could not get past the corner.  I did record  a video of it, if you're interested.  Let me know if you want the video or have any questions.
