The game doesn't have a double-tap sprint mechanic. Shift only speeds up movement while it's held. It sounds like a direction key may occasionally remain registered as held on certain keyboards. I haven't been able to reproduce the issue yet, but I'll keep looking into it.

Thanks for the suggestion! Full numpad movement, including diagonal directions, is now supported in the latest update.
