I really like these thoughts about how the combat of D&D contextualized the non-combat roleplaying!
Perhaps this is another way of saying the same thing, but I like Salen and Zimmmerman’s definition of play as “free movement between rigid constraints” (or something like that, from memory).
I think that’s a useful lens for thinking about this! Where does the “free movement” of roleplaying sit in relation to the rigid constraints of the (many layers of) rules in a game like D&D? (Or Apocalypse World?) And how does it change the flavor of the play experience if that play is miles away from the constraints in a vast open space, or pressing hard against them?
I feel like a fun science-fiction dead gods trope is playing with the idea of gods bodies floating around in space. Are the bodies of dead gods a natural resource that are mined for the god-oil that is required for faster than light travel? Are they not dead, but just dormant, and there are factions trying to wake them up? Does one's proximity to a dead god affect the strength of one's space magic (close you can do Jedi stuff, but far away, your in no-magic hard sci-fi land)? Is it not the gods that are dead, but the people!? Etc.!
“An overview of a setting with a complete pantheon and cosmology” is correct! Although, you can play with the idea of “complete” since the idea is to make a very small book that suggests a very big world/cosmos. I’ll update the jam to be a little more explicit about this. I may have gotten carried away doing everything in the style of Lord Entropy’s rules lol.
Writing an adventure in the setting of Nobilis is not “officially” the topic of the jam, but if that’s what you’re really excited about, go for it! The spirit of the thing is to make something small and fun inspired by PTFO and Nobilis, and all the other restrictions are mainly just there to breed creativity as they say!
I had so much fun playing the solo version of this game! Exploring character and worldbuilding within the frame of the quite contemplation of fishing was a delight. Here is a transcript of my game.
