In 1991 I did a study that noted video game playing was often a precursor to slot machine playing. On a psychological and behavioural level, video games and slot machines share many of the same features. Rapid visual and auditory feedback, near miss opportunities, intermittent reinforcement schedules are all structural components that video games and slot machines share to encourage addiction and money spending. Their study demonstrated that 50% of participants would spend money on a loot box, and only 75% of participants identified the loot box as a form of gambling.
