You are completely right about needing a threat, punishing the 'dig straight down' strategy with some enemies or traps would definitely spice up the gameplay and balance the progression. I completely agree with you about the beginning, balancing the early game grind during a jam is super tricky, and it definitely starts a bit too slow before the fun upgrades kick in. You're also spot on about the music! I ran out of time right before the deadline, but adding a cool soundtrack and fixing the early-game pacing are at the top of my list for a post-jam update.
