New update is up! It should fix the freezes, the first nights are easier, and dying is now much scarier. Consider that a feature 😄

This will be my last update for The Replacement for now. I'm moving on to other projects, so the morgue is officially closed for repairs. Thank you so much for all the testing and the detailed reports. You've been the best (and only 😅) QA team I've ever had.

No pressure to keep playing, but if you do try the new version, I'd love to hear how your last shift goes!

(1 edit)

Thanks a lot for sticking with it and reporting everything, it really helps!

I've uploaded a new version. The main fixes:

  • The freeze after dying (or at the end of a shift) should be fixed. Please re-download before your next session.
  • The first two nights are now easier, so you have time to learn how things work.
  • Ghosts should no longer get stuck at doors, and the flashlight works more reliably against them.

A few survival tips, since the game doesn't explain itself well yet (that's on me!):

  • Keep the fridges cold. If a body warms up, something wakes up.
  • When the power goes out, start the generator, and keep it fueled. Too many devices at once will blow the fuse.
  • Drawers sometimes slide open on their own. Keep checking them and close them.
  • Coffee is for emergencies. It makes you faster, and if you ever get locked out of a room, drinking it highlights where the key is.
  • Hold the flashlight on a ghost to burn it away, but it drains the battery fast.
  • The flashlight only chases a ghost away for a while. It keeps coming back until you cool down the body it came from.

If anything feels confusing or unfair, please tell me. That helps me just as much as the bug reports, because I want the game to teach this without needing a comment like this one. 😄

Haha, the comment section is totally fine. Honestly, we're the only ones here anyway :D

Good news: I've made the first night much easier and tweaked other values so the first two nights are more forgiving. That way you can learn how everything works before things get really tense. Just re-download the latest version from the page before your next session.

If it gets stuck again, please tell me what you were doing right before it happened. If you can, also send the log file from: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\NullMesh\The Replacement\Player.log (grab it before reopening the game, since relaunching overwrites it). That would help me a lot in finding the problem.

Good luck on your shift, and I can't wait to see the Let's Play!

Hi inventia, thank you so much for playing and writing this! That jumpscare means the morgue won your first shift 😄 I'm really glad you felt the tension build up. That's exactly the feeling I want.

Sorry the game got stuck on you, I really want to fix it. If you remember, could you tell me:

  • What you were doing when it got stuck: refueling the generator, replacing a fuse or battery, checking the temperature, or using the nitrogen?
  • What "stuck" looked like: did the whole game freeze, did an item or button stop responding, or did you physically get stuck somewhere in the building?
  • Did it happen after the power went out or the ghosts appeared?

I'd also love your honest thoughts on balance. Which tasks felt unclear, too fast, or unfair? What would make a shift more fun to survive? Negative feedback helps me the most, so please don't hold back.
