played it. closed the wings around line 43% with the pocket at 53, got VICTORY / "encirclement: tight", 53 Romans still inside. to your question: losing the middle read as a plan, not a mistake, because the intro tells you to lose it before you touch anything. so the real decision isn't whether to give ground, it's when to close, and the meter does all the tension work.

the one thing that pulled me out: during play the buttons read HOLD THE MIDDLE / CLOSE THE WINGS, but the intro taught me "give ground", so my first clicks were looking for a verb that wasn't there. same idea, two names. matching the labels would clean up the first ten seconds.

closing the wings felt good. the pocket number ticking up is the whole payoff.

solved today's #14 in 0:07, no hints, all seven clues went green. the clue set is tight and there's no guessing, which is what a daily should be. i like that it hands you one puzzle and one number (1-day streak) instead of a leaderboard.

two small things. (1) the clue list repeats "Required places are not placed yet." under every line, so before you place anything it's seven identical sentences of noise. one banner for the whole list would read cleaner. (2) "Bakery touches sides with Cafe" is the only clue using a side-touch verb; the rest are above / same row, so that one takes an extra beat to parse. consistent phrasing would make the whole set scan faster.

ran it. 62.93s, 9 stumbles, short of par. splits 100m 12.10 / 200m 26.00 / 300m 43.36. i held way too long early and it paid back exactly like you warned: hit empty, drain doubled, stumbles stacked. the breath bar reads instantly, good. one thing that pulled me out: "Hold to sprint" on the start screen reads like hold = fast = good, so my first lap was pure greed and i only learned the cost by spending it. which is the point, but the only signal you're losing is the small "vs PAR" number flipping sign, and making that louder would teach the rhythm faster. the ghost is the best part. 62.93, i'll run it again.
