New version runs without issue.

Shortly after making my post I bought the Steam version and the new fixed itch.io EXE unsurprisingly found the Steam save. Just to make sure that it was the new version that fixed the issue and not something about Steam initialization that got it, I tried the old download again (and got the same result with that old version as before, no window). So your changes did resolve whatever it was. Thanks!

Unzipping the Windows zip file and double-clicking the EXE or running it from a command prompt results in no action (no error message, no window appears, no matching executable listed in task manager). No windows application error in Event Viewer. EXE is possibly immediately exiting without error.
