From what I can tell most people are treating the area that the character is working in as an atmosphere. You should consider it a null zone where the only heat transfer that happens is through radiation. You need to add the gasses into a closed system (semi closed). Through various methods, I have personally seen temps get to 20000+. Also you should stay with charcoal unless you really need 10,000 degree temps.
